Shirley Kennelly, age 86, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2015, in Richmond, TX. He was born on May 09, 1929 in Fort Bend County's Brown Community to Fred Andrew and Sallie Brown Kennelly. He grew up in Rosenberg and graduated from Rosenberg High School in 1946 where he played football, basketball and ran track. He was the art editor on the annual staff and drew the picture of the Brahma Bull mascot that was used by the school.
Shirley graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in Physical Education and attended the University of Houston for post-graduate classes. He served in the United States Navy being honorably discharged in 1955. He taught in the Sheldon School District from 1956-58 and in the Needville School District from 1958-59. From 1960-66, he was an elementary P.E. coach with Lamar Consolidated School District. Shirley began working for Fort Bend Telephone Company in 1967 as the purchasing agent, the job he held until his retirement.
Shirley was very proud to be a member of the Descendant's of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred Organization as his great-great maternal grandparents, George Samuel and Martha Pentecost, were among the first 300 settlers brought to Texas. His great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Beard, was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. His passion was researching his heritage and accumulated many binders of the information he was able to locate. He was a founding member of the "Kroger Coffee Club" in Rosenberg , a lifelong member of 1st Baptist Church of Rosenberg, TX and loved to play golf.
In addition to his parents, Shirley is predeceased by siblings Judge Clyde B. Kennelly, Mary Belle Rice Day, Jessie Mae Skinner and Andrew Jackson Kennelly.
Survivors include his wife, Janet, of 58 years; daughter, Becky Kennelly Haas and husband Robert; daughter, Patricia Kennelly Boring; grandchildren, Amanda Haas, Kelly Haas, Ashley Boring, Adrienne Boring and Eric Boring; sister, Thelma Callender and numerous other relatives.
Visitation will be held on October 6, 2015 from noon until service time at
Garmany and Carden Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 2:00 in
the chapel with burial immediately following at Morton Cemetery in Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorials be made to the Descendant's of Austin's Old 300, 35 Ambleside Crescent Dr, Sugar Land, TX 77479.
